What is Amateur Radio?

"Amateur radio (also called ham radio) is the use of designated radio frequency spectrum for purposes of private recreation, non-commercial exchange of messages, wireless experimentation, self-training, and emergency communication. The term "amateur" is used to specify persons interested in radio technique solely with a personal aim and without pecuniary interest, and to differentiate it from commercial broadcasting, public safety (such as police and fire), or professional two-way radio services (such as maritime, aviation, taxis, etc.)." - Wikipedia

"Ham radio is the only hobby in which you can be an inventor, a collector, an emergency worker, an athlete, an engineer, a radio show host,
a scaler of heights, a teacher and mentor, an astronomer, and a geophysicist. All at the same time. It remains the most powerful and flexible
means of communication available to the private citizen in the world." - Unknown

With the popularity of our Baofeng Chinese radios, you may want to consider adding the GMRS, FRS, and MURS services in the radios for any non-ham users in your family.....I've applied for the GMRS 5 yr license to also use these frequencies

FRS - No license required, limited to 1/2 watt.  channels 1-7 shared with GMRS http://wireless.fcc.gov/services/index.htm?job=service_home&id=family

GMRS - license required...$85.00 for 5 yr.  Limited to 5 watts on channels 1-7 (shared with FRS, and 50 watts on channels 15-22  http://wireless.fcc.gov/services/index.htm?job=service_home&id=general_mobile

MURS - No license required, limited to 2 watts...http://wireless.fcc.gov/services/index.htm?job=service_home&id=multi_use

Here's a pdf file link for the channel numbers and power output for each service...
